When I think Casino, I think Cards and Dice. While making statement card pieces can require some skill, dice are an easier way to transform your space or event to give it that Casino Feel and make a statement! In this DIY guide, we’ll show you how to create your own large foam dice that will impress your guests and elevate the atmosphere.

Materials Needed

Before you begin this project, you'll need to gather the following materials:

  • Foam Block: While there are a range of materials that can used from this project such as a cardboard box or wood, we used Polystyrene foam for two main reasons - Rigidity and weight which make it a safe and portable decoration.

  • Cutting Tool: A sharp, lengthy knife will make clean cuts through the foam.

  • Ruler and Measuring Tape: For accurate measurements.

  • Marker: To outline your designs.

  • Acrylic Paint: Here you can get creative with colours from signature black and white to bold or funky colours.

  • Paint Roller: We recommend rollers with nap sizes between 7-10 mm to balance getting enough paint with a nice smooth finish. Remember, the lower the nap size, the smoother the finish!

  • Sandpaper: Handy for smoothing any rough edges after cutting.

  • PVA Glue (Optional): If you're finding it difficult getting foam blocks to the right size then a solvent free glue can be used to stick those sheets together to make a block!

Having all these materials ready will set you up for success.

Measuring and Cutting the Foam

To create your large foam dice, follow these steps:

  1. Decide on Size: For a stackable set-up, aim for 30cm cubes. You can adjust the size for larger or smaller dice as needed.

  2. Mark the Foam: Measure and use a marker to outline a perfect cube shape on the foam sheet. Ensure all sides are equal.

  3. Cut the Foam: Carefully cut along your lines with the utility knife. It’s better to make several passes rather than cutting straight through all at once to avoid jagged edges.

  4. Smooth the Edges: Use sandpaper to smooth any rough or uneven edges after cutting. This will help your dice look more professional.

By following these steps, you will have a visually appealing foam cube ready for painting.

Painting the Dice

Now you can bring your foam dice to life with paint. Here’s how:

  1. Base Coat: Apply a white acrylic paint base coat to all sides. A smoother finish will help the dice stand out.

  2. Allow to Dry: Let the base coat dry completely, which typically takes about an hour, depending on the paint's thickness.

  3. Add Dots: Use a small brush to paint the dots. For a standard die, paint one dot on one side, two on another, and continue up to six dots. Accurate placement is important for a traditional look.

  4. Final Touches: Once the dots are dry, consider applying a clear acrylic sealer. This will enhance durability and add a glossy finish to the dice.

Well-painted dice can last for multiple events, making this a worthwhile investment.

Adding Details

To enhance the visual appeal of your large foam dice, think about incorporating extra details:

  1. Shading: Add depth by painting a darker shade around the edges of the dots. This creates a three-dimensional effect, making them pop.

  2. Texture: Use a sponge to dab on paint, creating a speckled texture. This adds interest and uniqueness to each die.

  3. Personalization: Match the colors to your event's theme. If you're hosting a Las Vegas night, incorporate gold or red accents.

These artistic touches will make your dice stand out, adding a personal flair to your event decor.

Making the Most of the Dice at Your Event

With your large foam dice ready, think creatively about how to use them during your casino-themed event:

  1. Game Props: Use the dice for popular games like Craps. They can also serve as interactive elements where guests can roll them for prizes.

  2. Decorative Elements: Strategically place the dice around the event space as decorations. Consider using them as centerpieces or in fun photo booth setups.

  3. Interactive Stations: Create a fun area where guests can roll the dice to win small prizes or participate in gamified challenges. This involvement enhances guest enjoyment and engagement.

When used creatively, your foam dice can significantly elevate the atmosphere of your event, keeping guests entertained and engaged. Whether used for games, decor, or interactive engagement, these foam dice are sure to impress your guests. So gather your materials, unleash your creativity, and prepare to have a fantastic time at your next event!
